Comments

Gold Reef City is a theme park near Johannesburg, South Africa, that is located on the site of a gold mine that was closed in 1971. Everything within the attraction based on a vintage theme corresponding to the 1886 gold rush that led to the founding and rapid expansion of the city of Johannesburg. These souvenir tokens were minted in the denominations of the old South African Pound currency that circulated in the area at that time.

Hern's Handbook on South African Tokens by Brian Hearn and Allyn Jacobs (Second Edition, August 2009) states on page 110:

"The Gold Reef City Mint was a branch of the South African Mint and produced these pieces as advertising momentoes. Although each had a denomination nothing could be purchased with these pieces as South Africa was on the Decimal System. Cased proof sets are available. (Various dates exist.) It is believed that in the early years a 'precious metals' set was produced."
