Comments

From 1985 the RAM updated the obverse of the 2 cent coin with the Raphael Makleouf Effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. It was used until 1991 after which the 1 cent coin was withdrawn from circulation in February 1992 and after removal from circulation, the coins were melted down to make bronze medals for the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia.

The decision to stop minting it was announced in August 1990. The main reasons included the diminishing purchasing power of the coin and the rising costs of its production which eventually overtook its face value.

A Fine Silver (.999) Proof version of the coin was included in the 1991 "Masterpieces in Silver" eight coin set.
