Items from the Duchy of Upper Lotharingia

In 959, Lotharingia, a vast kingdom with a European dimension, was divided into two distinct duchies: Lower Lotharingia and Upper Lotharingia, the latter being called simply Lorraine afterwards. This territory organized around the Moselle originally includes the province of Trier located on the left bank of the Rhine. The duchy of Upper Lorraine had as its first duke Frederick of Bar, brother of the bishop of Metz Adalberon and brother-in-law of Hugh Capet: he received this duchy from Emperor Otto the Great. This duchy will indeed depend throughout its history on the Holy Roman Empire, whether under the House of Bar or that of Verdun which succeeds it until 1047, when Adalbert of Alsace takes power as the first hereditary duke of Lorraine, thus ending the transitional period that constitutes Upper Lotharingia. The coinage attached to Upper Lotharingia is extremely limited, especially because of the important parallel coinage of archbishopric of Trier and bishoprics of Metz, Toul and Verdun, which strike in association with the name of German kings.
